It's me, Matt!

Hi, I'm Matt

Neuroscience PhD & engineer. I help research teams design experiments, build custom systems, and turn complex data into answers.

About Me

I'm a neuroscientist and engineer who likes building the tools that make hard experiments possible. I trained in biomedical engineering at Duke, then spent eight years at two Max Planck institutes, finishing a PhD in neurobiology at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence in Munich.

For my PhD, I built a real-time virtual reality system for freely moving mice that tracked an animal's head at 360 frames per second and redrew its world in under 20 milliseconds. I then used machine learning to ask how the visual cortex combines what an animal sees with how it moves. That work took me across the full data stack, from electronics and motion capture through computer vision, statistical modeling, and terabyte-scale analysis pipelines.

Today I work with research teams as an independent consultant through DeepBio Analytics. I'm based in Boston, Massachusetts, and work with labs and companies everywhere, remotely or in person. I look at challenges from first principles to find solutions that work in practice. If you're stuck on a technical problem or want to think an idea through, I'd love to hear from you.

What I Can Do

I partner with academic labs and biotech teams on anything from a one-off analysis to a complete experimental platform.

Experience

Founder and Scientific Consultant - DeepBio Analytics LLC

May 2025 - Present | Incorporated May 2026

Founder of DeepBio Analytics, a data science and scientific consulting practice serving biotech and neuroscience research teams. I help clients design robust experimental protocols, analyze complex biological data, and build custom software, computer vision, and LLM tools for research workflows. I began consulting independently in May 2025 and incorporated the practice as DeepBio Analytics LLC in May 2026.

This work draws directly on my PhD and postdoc research at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence, where I built real-time computer-vision and VR pipelines, built experimental setups from sensors to data acquisition, and modeled neural activity across imaging, video, and behavioral datasets.

Current engagement: working with a client at Cornell University.

Postdoctoral Researcher and PhD Student

Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence | Oct 2018 - Dec 2024

Built immersive VR environments and ML pipelines to investigate how the brain integrates vision and body motion.

Selected Achievements:

  • Developed a real-time VR system with sub-20ms latency for freely moving rodents.
  • Applied machine learning techniques to analyze large-scale neural and behavioral datasets, uncovering insights into sensory integration in the visual cortex.
  • Featured in Werner Herzog's documentary "Theatre of Thought" and the ZDF program Terra Xplore.

Research Fellow

Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience | Jul 2016 - May 2018

Developed real-time computer vision pipelines for neuroimaging data and ran 2-photon calcium imaging experiments.

Selected Achievements:
